Understanding the Differences Between Civil and Structural Engineering

7/18/2016

Civil Engineering
Structural and civil engineering are two disciplines in the engineering field that are quite similar to each other. Both engineering types are responsible for making sure construction projects are safe, stable and cost-effective. However, they hold vital differences that make them distinct from each other.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Civil engineers typically are involved in the overall supervision of a construction site and are focused on how the construction projects will impact the environment. Structural engineers, on the other hand, are usually tasked with looking at the effect of various conditions of the infrastructure of the construction project.
The major differences between the disciplines include the following:
  • Civil engineering is a broad subject that includes structural engineering. Structural engineering is a subject under civil engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • Structural engineers analyze the effect of temperature and wind fluctuations on tall buildings and other structures. Civil engineers work strictly on research, environmental factors and or design and may act as supervisors at a construction site.
All structural engineers are civil engineers. However, not all civil engineers are structural engineers. Despite their similarities or differences, both civil and structural engineers must be familiar with the laws and regulations in the places where they work.

Nice explanation, Thanks! In this mode, the intention is to assign actual units (hours) and costs to resources, then calculate units and costs to completion, and possibly conduct an Earned Value analysis. In this situation, it is important to ensure that the minimum number of resources are assigned to activities, and preferably only one resource assigned to each activity. The process of updating a schedule in Sydney becomes extremely difficult and time consuming when a schedule has many resources per activity. The scheduler is then under threat of becoming a timekeeper and may lose sight of other important functions, such as calculating the forecast to complete and the project finish date. Primavera P6 tool is really usefull to manage this process

It's interesting to know that structural engineering is a subject under civil engineering. When I built my new house, we hired both a structural engineer and a civil engineer at our architect's advice, but I didn't know what the difference was. I'll have to share this information with my wife because she was wondering too.

It was helpful when you explained that structural engineering is included under the broad category of civil engineering. My brother is trying to find the right professional to design his new building by the highway in our city. I'll share this info so he can more easily determine what type of engineer to hire for the project!

It was interesting when you pointed out that civil engineers are in charge of supervising construction sites. Would it be a good idea to have more than one civil engineer supervise a work site? This seems like a good way to ensure that construction goes properly.

I want to get a building made, but I want to make sure that I do it right. It makes sense that I would want to get a professional to help me out with this. They would be able to ensure that I plan everything out properly.

Wow, one of the best blogs on civil and structural engineering I've seen so far. I'm into the industry for about 12 years now and the depth of the article really amazes me.

Thanks for explaining the difference between structural and civic engineers. My boss mentioned the other day we need to hire a civil engineer for an upcoming project. I wasn't sure what he went, but now I understand. I'll make sure we find one who has been well trained and has a good amount of experience!
